Unity candles have been used in weddings for many years so they are a fairly common wedding tradition in today’s day and age. Traditionally, a white pillar candle is surrounded by two smaller taper candles, which are displayed on a decorated table. The bride and the groom will each pick up a taper candle, and together they will light the center unity candle. This ceremony is a visual representation of the newly created bond between man and wife.

Unity Candles. Traditional unity candles are white, but some couples prefer something more unique. Its now possible to have a unity candle made with the couple’s names and wedding date with different colors and details You can also include a photo of the couple. If you are planning a wedding then you may consider a unity candle to symbolize the bond you and your soon to be spouse. It is no longer seen as a symbol of the end of individuality. It has evolved into a symbol of two individuals joining into a separate-and-equal bond with one another. A unity candle can be a wonderful ending to your wedding ceremony and a great way to get friends and family involved in your ceremony.

Unity Candle Traditions. Sometimes the couple will blow out the taper candles lighting the unity candle. Sometimes they leave these candles lit, which can symbolize that they are each individuals, but now joined together through marriage.

Another tradition is to have family members hold an unlit candle. At the beginning of the ceremony a single guest’s taper is lit, and one by one, everyone will light their candle. This symbolizes the family and friend’s support of the couple in their marriage. Then the couple will light their unity candle.
